Sometimes I think that Social Media like FaceBook and Tumblr have done more damage to Fat Acceptance than all the Trolls from eternity combined. Discussion in Fat Acceptance too often have been reduced to nothing more than a bunch of people pushing their “like” button
I like this older article at Notblueatall about Old Spice Cologne biased marketing message to fatter guys.
Old Spice’s tag line was “Somewhere in there There’s A Man In There, Old Spice, Smell Better Than Yourself”. They were attacking the Masculinity and Hygiene of fat men all in one marketing campaign.
The primary author at Notblueatall too the vein that it is a bias toward femininity that hurts fat men when society says they are feminine. Then I ask when fat women complain and bemoan the fact that society views them as mannish, that it is not a negative bias toward Masculinity on the part of fat women? Why is it in Fat Acceptance that only fat women are allowed to reject society’s label of gender misfit?
I think that the day that Fat Acceptance takes a good/honest look at its “absolute paradigm that fat is feminine” that all Fat People will be better served by Fat Acceptance.
Lesley Kinzel in one of her articles expressed best what I am trying to say
…………………………… As I recently observed on Fatcast, fat’s tendency is to fuck with gender on a equal-opportunity scale. Culturally-speaking, fatness exerts a masculinizing (or defeminizing) force on women’s bodies, and a feminizing (or emasculating) force on men’s bodies, and if you identify as falling outside the convenient gender binary, well, then it tends to strip you of any sexual identity at all, so far as mainstream recognition is concerned. No matter how you identify and present yourself, gender-wise, fatness is going to fuck with it………………..

The key word in her statement is “Culturally-speaking”. Historically Fat Acceptance has partially agreed with what Society had to say about fat men and at the same time it rejected everything society had to say about fat women.
Fat Acceptance will always be more pf a social club than a social activist movement until its mission statement goes beyond “fat women are hot and sexy”
